Werri Lagoon

werri laggon at dawn, with single kayaker

Located at the north end of Werri Beach, the lagoon is a great place to drop a line or go for a kayak.

The Lagoon is also the southern end point of the Kiama Coast Walk and is occasionally open to the sea as a result of heavy rainfall or strong seas. This may limit access to Werri Beach - it is best to contact Kiama Visitors Centre for an update.

There is a small car park here and street parking along Werri Street.

Estuary entrance dynamics

Werri Lagoon is categorised as an ‘Intermittently Closed and Open Lake and Lagoon' (ICOLL). ICOLL’s naturally alternate between being open or closed to the ocean, when a sand beach barrier forms and breaks down at the entrance. This sand barrier forms and breaks down by waves, tides, flood flows and winds which move the sand and sediment. Council continues to monitor Werri Lagoon.

Council policy

Council adopted an Interim Entrance Management Policy for Werri Lagoon in 2005.

This policy allows Council to artificially open the entrance of the lagoon when specific ((RL) 1.8m Australian Height Datum (AHD) or, high tide if it reaches a level of 1.65m AHD) water levels are reached. This is done to prevent flooding which causes excessive damage to private and public land and roads, following heavy rainfall.

When the entrance is opened, either artificially by Council or naturally - Council is required to monitor the area.
