Correctly Disposing of Batteries: A Guide for Kiama Residents

Proper disposal of batteries is essential for protecting our community and environment. Here’s what you need to know:

Safe Disposal of Household Batteries.

  • Storage: Remove batteries from devices that are not in use. Store old, used, and empty batteries in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, until you can dispose of them properly.
  • Recycling Options: Single-use batteries can be recycled at specific retail outlets. Computer and phone batteries fall under e-waste recycling, while vehicle batteries can be dropped off at select retail outlets and garages.

Drop-Off Information*

  • Community Recycling Centre: You can drop off household and car/truck batteries for free at our community recycling centre located at the Minnamurra Waste & Recycling Facility.

*Household quantities only. Commercial waste not accepted.

Understanding Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries are commonly found in phones, tablets, power banks, computers, toys, appliances, tools, and mobility equipment like electric bikes and scooters. When damaged, these batteries can burst violently, posing a fire risk that is difficult to extinguish.

To safely dispose of lithium batteries:

  1. Remove the battery from the device.
  2. Tape the terminals using non-conductive tape
  3. Place the taped battery in the dedicated bin at our Community Recycling Centre.

Why Proper Disposal Matters

Batteries should NEVER be placed in your kerbside bins. Rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries are hazardous; they can spark fires during collection and recycling processes. This includes batteries from laptops, mobile phones, power tools, and cameras.

When disposed of incorrectly, batteries become hazardous waste that can leak toxic chemicals, contaminating groundwater and harming ecosystems. By recycling batteries, up to 95% of their components can be recovered.

Let’s work together to keep Kiama safe and eco-friendly.
