Noise
Unwanted or offensive noise can be annoying, affect sleep and have an impact on our health.
Noise is the most common environmental issue that residents contact Council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority (NSW) about.
Residential noise
Restrictions on domestic noise are outlined on the NSW EPA's website.
These include hours of operation for:
- power tools
- swimming pool pumps
- musical instruments
- amplified sound equipment
- domestic air conditioners.
Restrictions on car and house alarms also exist.
We have information on what to do about a barking dog in the Animal section of this website.
Often people are unaware that their activities may be causing a problem.
They are usually happy to work with you to help out.
Try to solve the problem kindly by talking to the person causing the noise.
If a problem persists, discuss the issue with an independent mediator.
Community Justice Centres (CJCs) offer this professional service, where your neighbour volunteers to participate.
It's free and has a high success rate.
Visit the CJC website for your nearest office or phone 1800 990 777.
