Beach safety and water safety

Jones Beach

Kiama Municipality is home to some stunning rivers, estuaries, waterways and beaches.

We invite and welcome all visitors and locals to safely enjoy our beaches and waterways.

Please swim at our patrolled beaches(PDF, 512KB) and swim between the flags.

Unfortunately, we experienced several deaths in the water over the 2024-25 summer season.

We urge all visitors and locals adhere to the following water safety advice:

  • check swim conditions prior to entering the water
  • pay attention to the signs and other safety guidelines
  • no flags mean no swimming!
  • listen to advice and follow instructions from Lifeguards and volunteer Lifesavers
  • swim to your abilities and know your limitations
  • if you're using a watercraft, wear a lifejacket and stick to designated areas
  • don't enter the water if you're under the influence of alcohol or other drugs

Surf Lifesaving Australia has produced Beach Safety fact sheets in multiple languages to download.

Kiama Council in partnership with Surf Lifesaving NSW has installed Emergency Relay Beacons (ERBs) at South Bombo Beach, as well as other drowning black spots at Kendalls Beach and Blowhole Point.

In an emergency you can activate the beacon, which instantly connects you to the Surf Lifesaving NSW Operations Centre.

A text message also alerts the nearest lifesaver or lifeguards.
