Kiama West/Springside Hill preliminary assessment

Kiama Council has unanimously resolved to:
- Not support the Planning Proposal (PP-2023-2833) (PP) for the rezoning of land at 177 Long Brush Road, Jerrara, 33 Greyleigh Drive, Kiama and 103 Jamberoo Drive, Kiama, as it is inconsistent with the Kiama Local Strategic Planning Statement 2020 and Illawarra and Shoalhaven Regional Plan 2041 and therefore does not satisfy the strategic merit and site-specific merit tests.
- Not send the proposal to the Department of Planning for Gateway Determination.
Council has also resolved to:
- Actively work with the proponent through the Growth and Housing Strategy process to consider this land, along with other sites for future potential urban expansion, in conjunction with the Urban Development Program.
Chief Executive Officer Jane Stroud said Council was committed to working with all developers and proponents, as part of its Growth and Housing Strategy, to have detailed, and deep conversations about which growth is right for our community.
“This work includes developing a shared understanding of where growth is most appropriate and what infrastructure is needed to support that growth, whether that is roads, water, sewage or schools,” Ms Stroud said.
“Creating communities is more than just growing house numbers. Council has proven it's open to that conversation and we look forward to our ongoing discussion with Traders in Purple and other developers in our community.”
Ms Stroud said Council recently hosted an industry forum, attended by more than 60 housing industry representatives, including builders, consultants, building designers, and developers.
“This event was a springboard to launch the next phase of our consultation about our Growth and Housing Strategy, which includes an online engagement portal and an in-depth survey.”
The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and includes a range of questions about growth and opportunities for the future.
Paper copies of the survey are also available at our Customer Service Counter at Council’s Administration Building and the Kiama and Gerringong Libraries.
Council has also noted a petition presented at its meeting on Tuesday 16 April regarding bearing more than 600 signatures opposing the proposal.
