Kiama Council congratulates Mark Honey on being awarded Emeritus Mayor by Local Government NSW.
The Emeritus Mayor award is awarded to retired mayors to acknowledge their particular service to their council and community.
Mark Honey was first elected as a councillor in 2012, serving as Mayor from 2016 until his retirement in 2021.
His term as Mayor brought many challenges including severe drought, devastating bushfires, severe floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was also marked by significant organisational challenges for council to meet the NSW Government ‘Fit for the Future’ benchmarks.
A highlight was the opening of Blue Haven Bonaira on the site of the Old Kiama Hospital.
As well as councillor and Mayor, Mark Honey served on the Blue Haven Care Board, Local Traffic Committee, Cultural Board, Walking Tracks & Cycleways and Planning committees.
He also represented Kiama Council on the Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation and was a director on the CivicRisk Mutual Board.
Beyond council, Mark Honey is a member of the Kiama/Jamberoo RSL, having served his country between 1972 and 1974. He also has a strong involvement with the Kiama Rugby Club, Kiama Show Society, dairy industry bodies and many other sporting and community organisations.
